Web Sites: Standards

technical stuff

For those interested in the technical details of how we do what we do, here goes:

Markup

All our sites aim for XHTML 1.1 validation. Should this not be possible due to specific customer requirements, our markup standards degrade in this order:

  • XHTML 1.0 Strict
  • XHTML 1.0 Transitional
  • HTML 4 Strict
  • HTML 4 Transitional

Styling

In accordance with our use of XHTML, we aim to include the absolute minimum of style information within our web pages. We use CSS files to separate style from content and maximise accessibility.

We promise we will never, ever use tables to lay out web page elements!

Accessibility

Our approach to markup and styling helps to make our pages easy for assistive browser technologies to work with. We make sure we do the simple things well; all our pages must be completely understandable without the images and window dressing present, and of course all our <img> tags have alt attributes defined.
